Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of niqab usage on communication and social interaction among female students at IAI Yasni Bungo campus. The research is grounded in a socio-religious phenomenon in which the niqab, as a symbol of Muslim women’s religious commitment, continues to generate controversy and stigma within academic settings. In the context of a campus environment that serves as a space for social and academic interaction requiring openness in communication, the niqab is often perceived as a barrier to effective interpersonal communication.

This research employs a qualitative approach using a phenomenological study design. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with niqab-wearing students, classmates, and lecturers, as well as documentation. The findings reveal that wearing the niqab does not constitute a significant barrier to communication and social interaction on campus. Niqab-wearing students are able to adapt positively through nonverbal communication strategies such as eye contact and head nods, and they actively participate in religious and social organizations.

An inclusive campus environment free from discrimination emerges as a key supporting factor in fostering harmonious interactions. The study also identifies adaptation strategies developed by niqab-wearing students to navigate social challenges, such as using open body language and actively engaging in academic activities. The study concludes that the niqab is not an intrinsic obstacle to communication and social interaction, provided that it is supported by an inclusive environment. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for educational institutions in formulating campus policies that are accommodating toward diverse expressions of religious identity
