Generative AI Policy
Policy on ChatGPT and Generative Artificial Intelligence based on the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) for el-Madib: Jurnal Pendidikan Dasar Use of Large Language Models and Generative AI Tools in Manuscript Preparation
el-Madib: Journal of Elementary Education acknowledges the benefits of using Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, and other generative AI tools as productivity aids for authors during the manuscript preparation process. These tools may assist in generating initial ideas, organizing content, summarizing, paraphrasing, and improving language quality.
However, all language models have limitations and cannot replace human creativity, critical thinking, and academic responsibility. Human oversight remains essential to ensure the accuracy, relevance, and appropriateness of the content presented. Therefore, El-Madib requires authors to consider the following when using generative AI tools:
Key Considerations
Objectivity
AI-generated text may contain biases related to gender, culture, or social perspectives and may not adequately represent diverse viewpoints. The use of AI tools may unintentionally reinforce such biases due to decontextualized information.
Accuracy
Generative AI may produce incorrect information, fabricated references, or content that appears linguistically plausible but is scientifically inaccurate. Authors must carefully verify all generated material.
Contextual Understanding
AI tools may struggle to fully understand educational contexts, particularly in elementary education, including pedagogical terminology and nuanced classroom situations.
Training Data
The performance of AI tools depends on the quality and scope of their training data, which may be limited in certain areas of elementary education research.
Guidelines for Authors
Authors are required to:
Clearly disclose the use of generative AI tools in their manuscripts, specifying the tools used and their purposes, in the methods or acknowledgments section.
Verify the accuracy, validity, and appropriateness of AI-generated content and references.
Provide proper citations and carefully review all references to ensure correctness.
Avoid plagiarism by cross-checking AI-generated text with original sources.
Acknowledge the limitations of generative AI tools in their manuscripts, including potential bias and errors.
⚠️ AI tools such as ChatGPT must not be listed as authors in any submission.
Appropriate corrective actions will be taken if undisclosed use of AI tools is identified in published articles.
Role of Editors and Reviewers
Editors and reviewers should assess the appropriateness of AI tool usage and ensure the reliability and academic integrity of the submitted content.
Additional Information
This policy follows the recommendations of the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) and the official statements of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) regarding the use of AI in scholarly publishing.
